How to Layer up Like a Pro

Sunday, November 16, 2014

With winter well and truly here, are you now packing your tees and jackets away till the sun comes out again and the weather eases up?  Well I may have the solution to all your worries, with some protective and thermal layering to match they don't have to just hang in your "summer side" of the closet. But how do you layer up without frumping up and look like a pro? Here is how it’s done, with these simple steps, you will able to pull off a look so sleek and stylish that even the Man Repeller would be envious, I'd be surprised if you weren't snapped in all you glory.

Make a statement:

Last year saw the birth of coats being the IT factor in every stylish girls look and hasn't stopped, now becoming an essential statement piece of the season and necessary in your wardrobe. Retailer's have brought out some of the best coats and jackets to suit all and keep you looking stylish and warm. From bright oranges to normcore navy's, cocoon to longline, any style, any shade. So, investing in one of these bad boys won't only be the best thing you could do this season but is the first step in becoming the ultimate layer up goddess. Therefore, I've rounded up some of the best coats off the highstreet, that will have heads turning and suit every gal out there:
From top right to left: Zara Faux Leather Coat, ASOS Cocoon Coat in Brushed Check, ASOS WHITE Mohair Wool Mix Cocoon Coat, Zara Wool Coat with Belt, Zara Studio Knit Kimono, ASOS Vintage Faux Fur Coat, Story Of Lola Longline Faux Fur Coat on ASOS, Next Coral Bouclé Coat, Sisley Ovoid Duffle Coat on ASOS. From bottom right to leftASOS Coat with Zip Pocket Detail, Zara Wool Coat with Crossover Collar, Zara Double Breasted Coat, ASOS Oversized Coat With Funnel Neck in Hairy Wool, Kardashian Kollection at Lipsy Oversize Coat, Kimberley Premium Waterfall Coat Camel, ASOS Oversized Coat With Waterfall Drape, ASOS TALL Coat In Relaxed Oversized Fit,  Monki Oversized Cocoon Coat on ASOS, Next Orange Bouclé Coat

Knitwear Rocks:

Knits are massive this season and with Rihanna wearing Céline knit from head to toe recently, this was a must have for layering up like a pro. From knit dresses to jumpers, if brought and worn correctly, you won't even need a coat. I happened to have only selected knitwear from Zara, simply due to my love for normcore which the brand is crazy and of course nothing beats a good Zara knit. So, here is my Zara fix on knits:
#FKStyleAdvice101: If you have a warm complexion, opting for a brighter knit is essential, unless you're wearing a bright coat. When opting for a dark knit, attempt to add a splash of colour - bright trousers, accessories, coat etc.

Cape fever:

After laying my eyes on Olivia Palermo in her personalised Burberry blanket cape, it's fair to say I'm in cape fever. But with a bank balance that couldn't even afford a fourth of this cape, I no longer have to cry as the highstreet have some pretty amazing capes that will suffice the absence of an FK or LCC Burberry blanket  in my wardrobe.
From top right to left: Next Abstract Cape, Pieces Blanket Cape Wrap Scarf on ASOS, Esprit Knitted Poncho on ASOS, ASOS Cape In Colour Block, River Island Tartan Faux Fur Trim Cape, ASOS Stripe Blanket Cape, Zara Hooded Checked Wool Cape. From bottom right to leftGlamorous Knitted Poncho Cape with Tassel Trim on ASOS, River Island Batik Cape, ASOS Cape With Roll Neck, ASOS Reversible Cape, Oasis Paisley Jacquard Wrap, ASOS Blanket Cape In Pattern With Fringing, Zara Fringed leather poncho.

#FKStyleAdvice101: With one of these bad boys you don't even need a massive coat, a leather jacket or even just a knit will do.

Wrap it up:

Chilly? Want to make a simple outfit super cute? Wrap it up. Whether it's thick, knitted, checked, silk or just cosy, a scarf isn't only a great layer to have this season but will keep you warm and cosy. Here are my favourite picks.

From top right to left:ASOS Oversized Black Check Square Scarf, Zara Fur Wraparound Stole, ASOS Oversized Scarf In Grey Check With Tassels, ASOS Tartan Check Scarf, ASOS Faces Print Oversized Scarf
From bottom right to left:ASOS Oversized Knit Scarf, ASOS Oversized Scarf With Stripes, ASOS Oversized Colour Block Scarf, Zara Wraparound Striped Scarf, Whistles Faux Fur Scarf.

Layering is definitely a lesson and sometimes you can look like your drowning in a mass of clothing, so to ensure you are doing it perfectly and like a pro, build slowly...
1) Start with a pair of your favourite jeans, skirt, whatever you fancy to wear on the bottom
2) Throw on a tee or collared shirt
3) Throw over a knit jumper - thick or thin
4) Either throw on a jacket and then add a cape or scarf
5) Or throw on a massive coat (add a scarf if its real cold)

These steps can differ depending on the weather but if you still need a little inspo:

  1. Loving all the winter layering inspiration here, I'm forever a coat girl (which reminds me I must go buy another one, lol) I'm after a big fur one next. Also a massive scarf fan and hoping to overload on oversized knits this winter too.
