Well, this is how I did, anyway.
Before Instagram became the hell of messed up algorithms and nonchronological timelines, getting noticed on social media was slightly easier, providing your content was of consistently high quality.
And while the way in which Instagram operates today has changed to the begrudging of us all -#bringbackchronologicaltimelines – the same methods in which I unknowingly took, may just help you out.
For many Instagram is where people connect with their friends and family and follow the “lives” of their favourite celebrities. For others, it provides a platform to interact and engage in various communities, that they don’t have access to in the real world. And for a lucky few, it’s a way to showcase their creative work and make money.
After discovering the plus size blogging community, and feeling more confident about my body, I started to create more personal style content. Tagging plus size social media pages that repost and share images of plus size women, and hashtagging communities like #effyourbeautystandards and others.
As a result, I opened the door to a different kind of audience. An audience separate from my school friends, family and the fashion bloggers that I had met over the years. And a member of that audience was Bianca King, a brand manager of a small independent plus size brand, who were looking for a brand ambassador. Next thing you know, I’m stood alongside Felicity Hayward and modelling their Spring/Summer and debut swimwear collection.
Unlike other models, I wasn’t scouted in a supermarket, at a concert or outside Topshop in Oxford Street. I was found on the gram. My journey is slightly different to the average, so I asked a few of my model friends, how they got into the business.

“My mum had always told me that I should model, as I was scouted when I was 12/13 for Select – which nothing came of – but my mum just kept on encouraging me. Then, of course, I got curvier as I got older, so when I moved to London for uni, my mum was just like “Poppy just do it it won’t hurt if they say no!” I got my girlfriend at the time to take some pics of me and sent them to Models1, and they replied saying I didn’t have “the right look.”
I was gutted by that. Then my flatmate at uni said IMM had just signed her friend and they were nice, so I thought I’d give it another go and sent my pics to them. I went to meet them two days later, and they signed me on the spot!”
Annisa S, darlingly sweet girl, who you’ve probably seen on a few billboards in London train stations.
“It’s actually a quite complicated story…my bestie forced me to participate in a competition for a photo shoot for a calendar by a German plus size brand, Sheego, they always have it once a year for marketing purposes. I made it to the final round of 18 girls. Then met Anna Scholz at the presentation of the 18 pictures, she was one of the judges who picked the last 12. I made it into the calendar and got the chance to talk to her at that event.
I studied in London at the time so she asked me if I would be interested in modelling at all. She was kind enough to shoot me back in London, and I sent those pics out to agencies. IMM invited me into their offices, and luckily they liked me enough to represent me.”

“I wanted to be a model from about the age of 15 – I just thought it looked so glamorous. I think it was the second season of Australia’s Next Top Model, and I decided that I would try out. While I was waiting in line, I was scouted by a ‘model feeder agency’. I did this 8-week course on how to be a model, including what you should be eating – which wasn’t much – and then it culminated in a runway show where agents attended. Two agencies then offered me contracts; both said they would need me to lose minimum two dress sizes before they could sign me – I was a UK 6/8 at the time. Because my mum wouldn’t let me sign the contracts (blessing in disguise in hindsight), I finished school and went to university.
It was in those years I started to see curvier girls in magazines like Cosmo and thought, I could try and give this another shot. So I sent my photos through to my current agency, and was sent a contract straight away! I’ve now been modelling as a curve model for almost two years!”
I remember buying my first bra at 13. Mum took me to Myer because she knew a brand that would make a good one that fit properly and was comfy. The bra Mum bought me was @berleiaus ✖️ flash forward to 2017, in Berlei’s 100th year, this campaign means the world to me as it is so special.
